Halfway to Christmas!

Today, June 25, is the half way mark to Christmas! This Christmas will be the first year I will have my own place so that's exciting. Here's a sneak peek of a few things I already know I'm asking Santa for! I'll be nice! ;)

Royal Purple

As you all might know purple is associated with royalty, luxury, and nobility. I haven't always been a huge fan of the color but my mother and sister definitely are. When my sister lived in the basement, her room was painted purple, kind of like the Purple Periwinkle below. When she moved out and I took her spot, I wanted to paint over it with a bubble gum pink. Needless to say, it never got painted and I had to live with those purple walls and my pink and zebra decor. No fun! I don't know if it was just that shade of purple, but I never got a good taste of good purple design. Until now.

I noticed that I like more of the eggplant shade of purple. Dark, sleek, and mysterious. I wanted to explore others shades as well. I went to several paint websites and found a variety of purples - there were a ton!

When designing with purple, rememeber that it looks great with high-gloss white trim. Silver accessories are a must if you want to feel royal. Sometimes, two shades of purple (a light and dark) can work well in a space. The berry-pink shade above (Dynamo) can look great with lime green, orange, or turquoise - great for a teen's room! There's so many colors that could go well with that!

There's no doubt that these rooms are luxurious. Everything about them - the silver, high-gloss white, two shades in one.

"Let's paint those cabinets purple!" wouldn't be a phrase from my lips, but they work well in that kitchen. How are feeling about this shade? Is it something you could see yourself living in? I think now that I've seen good design I can appreciate a royal purple. I never said I would paint my house purple, but I'm getting there. Maybe a powder room!

Have a royal day!

Prasing Pallets

I have been researching pallets for quite some time now and the more I do, the more fascinating they have become. Most people use recycled pallets for coffee tables but when I found this blog, I died a little. Check out this amazing day bed on top of all the decor around it. She explains just how she made it!

Other quite interesting pallet furniture creations:

And since the Fourth of July is coming up, create an American flag from pallets!

How are you feeling about pallets being used for more than just holding things?

Have a great day!

Design Books

I think it's very important to build your library with whatever you're doing in life. For me, design books are great ways to one, keep up with the trends in the world and two, learn about new techniques and designers. I have been researching great design books to have. Most are around the $30 range and if you're like me you don't have the money to spend on literature. I've decided that I want to start saving and purchase some of these books every so often. Here is a list of just some of the wonderful books in the world of interior design.

Mitchell Owens In House

Celerie Kemble To Your Taste

Deborah Needleman, Sara Ruffin Costello
and Dara Caponigro Domino: The Book of Decorating

Grace Bonney Design Sponge at Home

Deborah Needleman The Perfectly Imperfect Home

Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Interiors
(My favorite designer. She has 7 books from her Shabby Chic line.)
Jonathan Adler Happy Chic Accessorizing & Colors
(He has lots of books, too!)

The Law Firm

Many of you know, I conquered Commercial Design I this quarter and it has been nothing but a roller coaster. I thought this quarter would be laid back, relaxed since all I had was three lecture classes. But I was wrong. Building Codes like to have killed me and Universal Design was another class that involved too much of my attention. Commercial was only a two hour class which meant no lab time aka no time to work on our projects in class. Finding time at home, where there is food and TV and Internet and everything else to distract my attention, was almost impossible. AutoCAD on your laptop isn't easy and I don't like using all of my ink and paper to print out all of my documents. So, I decided to move into room 110 at Virginia College. I worked my butt off of this project and I am quite proud of my accomplishment.

There were technically three small (for lack of a better word) projects. They weren't all that small, but as everything is wrapping up I concluded they were easier to take on separately than all together as one larger project. Project 1 was the worst. It consisted of picking out all furniture, finishes, and fabrics. Also, drawing these objects on the floor plan, printing specification sheets of each piece, calculating a budget plan, and creating a new logo. Oh, and organizing all of this into a notebook.

Furniture Plan with schedule

The trusty notebook

I'm very organized... aka OCD.

The second project consisted of creating a reflected ceiling plan, creating an electrical plan, picking out light fixtures and creating an lighting plan, picking out signage and creating a signage plan, and designing a custom reception desk signage wall. Yes, there are lots of plans.

Electrical
The third project was my favorite. It consisted of selecting finishes such as paint and flooring, creating a finish plan with schedule, designing floor patterns, creating an artwork package and artwork plan, and, MY FAVORITE, making boards.

Break room, conference room, logo, artwork, and lighting

Waiting room and lawyer's offices

Materials folder

Carpet tile

So far, I've made A's on both 1 and 2. 3 is due today, hence why I don't have the rest of my things printed. I'm hoping that I can knock out the presentation with ease on Tuesday of next week. I'm excited and proud of my work. I have concluded Commercial design is not for me. Maybe because this project wasn't as fun, in my opinion. We are going to attack a health care project in Commercial II. Hopefully, I'll like it more. As of now, it's Residential for me!

I hope you all have a great weekend!
